A Total Loss","description":"Three Victoria bands take over The Phoenix Bar on Saturday, November 7 for a night of loud guitars, heavy riffs, rock and punk energy. Electric Druids bring the weight of a seasoned power trio. Originally formed in Swansea, UK and now based in Victoria, the band blends progressive hard rock, grunge and riff-heavy alternative rock. Kerrang! once described their sound as somewhere “between Rush and Soundgarden,” and they’ve become regulars on stages around Vancouver Island. War Eyes are a Victoria rock & roll band pulling from punk, hard rock and grunge, with raw guitars, big hooks and an emotional edge. Formed in 2024, the band followed their debut EP No Faces No Names with Let The Sun Rise, a darker and more urgent record built around the same unfiltered energy they bring to their live shows. A Total Loss hit from the punk side of the bill. The Victoria three-piece describe themselves as punk rock and melodic hardcore with a metal tinge, and their recently released First 3 Demos introduce that sound across “Day Stripper,” “Incel in a Cell” and “Hoarder.” It’s three different takes on heavy, guitar-driven music in one room — from the muscular alt-rock of Electric Druids, through the punk/grunge rock & roll of War Eyes, to the melodic hardcore attack of A Total Loss. Meltt’s upcoming third album is the culmination of everything the Vancouver indie-pop quartet have accomplished so far, all the while pushing their sound in new and exciting directions. True to its title, Pathways finds Chris Smith [lead vocals, guitar, bass, keys], Jamie Turner [drums, percussion], James Porter [guitar, keys, bass, vocals], and Ian Winkler [bass, keys, guitar] at multiple forks in the road and deciding to take all of them, submerging their sound in new rippling textures while still retaining the warm, textured glow that their music’s contained since their debut EP Visions in 2017.

Thematically, Pathways approaches what Winkler refers to as “four men approaching their 30s and figuring out their paths and lives.” Big topics abound, from relationships and the aftermath of loss to the strange and uneasy feeling that accompanies navigating the modern world at large. “Our tone is usually pretty optimistic and hopeful, but this time we let some darkness in,” Porter says.

Calgary singer-songwriter Samantha Savage Smith makes shimmering alt-pop that moves effortlessly between dream-pop, folk, roots and power-pop, anchored by her unmistakable soaring voice. Her acclaimed 2022 album Fake Nice earned her a place on multiple year-end best-of lists and established her as one of Calgary’s most distinctive songwriters. She returns this fall with Little Place, a new full-length album arriving September 25.

Vancouver singer-songwriter Jody Glenham makes “mood rock”, dreamy, introspective indie rock full of heart and swagger. Her latest EP, Still Here, finds Glenham at her most assured, pairing hazy guitars and soaring melodies with songs about resilience, self-reflection and finding your footing.

Opening the show will be a solo set from Peach Pyramid.
