Baby Boy & the Earthly Delights

Victoria, BC

What do surrealist painter Hieronymus Bosch and reggae have in common? These two artistic expressions are at the core of what reggae-rock-roots group Baby Boy & the Earthly Delights represents. Think of The Clash's foray into reggae with Sandinista! and the sweetness of Jack Johnson and you're close to the atmosphere of what the Earthly Delights bring forward. Led by Baby Boy, a self-proclaimed art nerd who isn't afraid of theatricality, their lyrics speak of myths, fables, and parallels to nature. But it wasn't always like that. It was a trip to Jamaica that Baby Boy took when he was young that allowed him to truly understand the magic of reggae music. Inspired by a cover band brilliantly playing the Tuff Gong hits that still define Jamaica today, Baby Boy had a musical revelation and awakening. The frontman of the cover band, who called himself "Mozzy", turned out to be a friend of Baby Boy's dad and he spent the night talking with them about the history of reggae and the inspiration behind it, specifically the legendary downbeat of the genre. A decade later, Baby Boy is heeding Mozzy's lessons. The Earthly Delights nods to its predecessors while taking roots / reggae music to new heights. With their melodic brass and spatial touches, guitar solos and rocksteady groove, Baby Boy & the Earthly Delights are a marvel of sound and story.
